20 Bishop's Square
This project is adjacent to Foster's Bishop's Square scheme and other new office developments, all of which have an air of sobriety about them. Contrasting this is Matthew Lloyd Architect's scheme for 20 Bishop's Square. The building is a simple rectangle on plan, 5 storeys high. The upper floors are given to residential use. The ground floor forms part of a restaurant which extends (via a new glass link) into the neighbouring St Botolph's Hall - a listed building. This was originally built in the 1890s for the Central Foundation School for Girls. The school moved out in the 1970s and the structure was used for a period as a hall for the nearby St Botolph's Church, from where it gains its name, but eventually fell into disuse. The hall is built from brickwork and faience (decorated and glazed earthenware), and these materials are reflected in the cheerful, multi-coloured terracotta cladding of the new building.
