University Hospital Basel
The additional space, which is needed for a new surgery department and the Women`s Clinic, is understood as a continuation of the existing building typology.
The new square structure is based on a large-scale concentric composition that allows flexible use of space.
The outpatient area of the Women`s Clinic, the surgery department and the delivery rooms are variations of the same basic structure.
In the floor plans, new types of surgery and delivery departments are developed. Through the choice of lighting – from the facade and from the centre – all the rooms receive natural light, despite their depth.
The exterior façade satisfies the complex requirements in relation to aesthetics, spatial and light quality, freedom from glare, protection of privacy, energy criteria and structural-physical criteria. Harmony between the old and new façades is achieved by adopting the existing order of storeys, proportions, and load-bearing structure that is readable in the façade.
