Botanical Garden
Barcelona’s Botanical Garden was designed by a team: architects Carlos Ferrater and Josep Lluís Canosa; landscape architect Bet Figueras; horticulturalist Artur Bossy and biologist Joan Pedrola. First was considered how the vegetation was structured. It was important to plan the layout according to geographic criteria, grouping the plants in the world’s 5 Mediterranean regions. And within these regional groupings, the plants should be combined according to ecological affinity, thus recreating landscapes as found in nature. Secondly the mountain itself provides the topographic conditions for establishing the different plant areas. This entailed designing the network of paths around the natural relief and avoiding large earth moving operations. The result was a triangular-shaped network adapted to the available space and the mountain slopes. This mesh of paths marked out the 71 spaces containing the principal plant communities found in Mediterranean climate regions all over the world.
