In 2007 it was decided that the secondary school 'Het 4e Gymnasium' will be located in the new district of Amsterdam's Houthavens to the west of the centre. Until that time, for the coming 5 - 10 years, this interim building is used. To help it fit in with the adjacent temporary container student housing and so it can be used afterwards at different places, it was built using a modular system. To create an enclosed inner space in this open area, it's been built around a courtyard. The sports facilities with a gym and a large fitness suite are behind the main school. This way, all the qualities of the Houthavens district are well used. As well as classrooms, the 4000m2 building has modern facilities, such as a media centre and a large auditorium. The façade has 2 elements that help intensify the character of the building; the flat aluminium façade of the inner courtyard, which also runs through to the outside, and the wooden façade which has been developed more spatially and in depth.
