Lootsbuurt
The Lootsbuurt in Amsterdam is a neighbourhood of 19th century worker's housing. The project is split between two locations on the Jacob van Lennepstraat, one on a corner of the Lootsstraat and the other further along the street. Both buildings are flanked by 19th century buildings. The corner block contains 20 social housing units of which four are suited for wheelchair users and five are designed for supervised accommodation. The corner of the block is open allowing contact between the street and the block's enclosed interior. The dwellings are accessed via open double-height galleries that give the project a bright and airy feel. While the building attaches itself to its neighbours by adopting their 19th century fenestration and detailing, it distinguishes itself by the subtle execution of these parts of the design. The end product represents a contemporary addition that shows respect for its surroundings.
