De Nieuwe Ooster Cemetery and Crematorium is the biggest cemetery in The Netherlands, in terms of numbers of graves. It was built in three phases: the first two in 1889 and 1915 by architect Leonard Springer; the third phase was built in 1928 and shows some characteristics of Springer's style, but it stands on its own in terms of design. Landscape architects Karres and Brands have chosen not to connect the three parts, but make the contrast more clearly defined. This way, each part of the cemetery gets an individual identity (text from website architects).
