Galeries Lafayette
Known for his slick surfaces and shining facades, French architect Jean Nouvel has combined transparent and translucent surfaces in this department store, and so creates an unforgettable shopping experience on the corner of the Friedrichstrasse and Franzosischestrasse. Once Berlin’s fanciest shopping street. Several glass cone-shaped volumes dominate the interior. The main cone rises several stories upwards from street level to the top of the building. A second, smaller, inverted cone drops from street level past two shopping levels and two parking levels underground. Check out the satellite images on the map, to see the amount of cones in this building from above.
